Buddenberg, Melvin and Vera (Meyer)

Melvin John Buddenberg was born 19 Jul 1906 in rural Bloomfield Twp. to Henry William and Bertha (Roth) Buddenberg. Henry W. was born in LaVerne, Province of Westphalen, Germany. At age 16 he left home and came to America. He married Bertha Roth and they settled on a farm in Bloomfield Twp. Henry W. and Bertha had 5 children: Harvey, Elmer, Wilbur, Melvin and Ruby.

Melvin grew up on the family farm and attended the rural school near his home. He married Vera Meyer 23 Mar 1930 at Waukon, IA.

Vera Zella Meyer was born 1 Dec 1908 near Elkader, IA, Clayton Co. to August and Lena (Halverson) Meyer. In 1909 the family moved to a farm in Bloomfield Twp. Vera attended the Castalia Public school. She graduated from Postville High School and became a rural school teacher. After their marriage they farmed on one of the farms owned by Melvin’s parents. Melvin and Vera shared the farm home with Henry W. and Bertha Buddenberg.

Melvin and Vera were members of the Zion Lutheran Church of Castalia. Melvin died 7 Feb 1982. Vera died 26 Aug 1957. They are buried at Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia. They were the parents of 3 children: Lolita Joyce (b. 29 Sep 1930); Beverly Jean (b. 11 Apr 1937); and Henry William “Bill” (b. 2 Jun 1938).

Henry William Buddenberg (known as Bill),son of Melvin and Vera (Meyer) Buddenberg, He graduated from Ossian High School. He entered the U.S. Army in 1956 and served 8 months. Bill married Madeline Rawson 2 Jun 1960 at Castalia United Methodist Church. Madeline, daughter of Harold and Naida (Peckham) Rawson, w. She graduated from Ossian High School and continued her education at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, IA where she received a LPN nursing degree. Bill and Madeline lived and farmed on the same farm where his parents lived in Bloomfield Twp. Bill had 2 sisters: Lolita and Beverly. Bill and Madeline were the parents of 5 children: Randall, Douglas, Brett, Bruce and Lynn - all born in Decorah.

Randy  married Denise Dickman 27 Sep 1980 at Salem Reformed Church in Ludlow Twp., Allamakee Co. Denise, the daughter of Norman and Darlene (Stuckman) Dickman,. Randy and Denise have 3 children: Joshua ; Zachary ; and Julie . Randy and Denise are dairy farmers. They are active in the Winneshiek Saddle Club.

Douglas  married Pamela Stendel 10 Oct 1981 at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, Ossian. Pamela  is the daughter of Earl and Arlene (Bodensteiner) Stendel. Doug and Pam have 3 children: Brittany Ann ; Bridget ;

and Blake . Doug is employed by the John Deere Co. in Elkader, IA. They live in Bloomfield Twp.

Brett was born 9 Apr 1965. Brett's ambition was to serve 4 years with the Marine Corps, then return to farming in northeast Iowa. However he collapsed during training exercises at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at San Diego,CA and died less than two hours later at the Balboa Naval Hospital on 28 Dec 1985. His burial was at the Pleasant View Cemetery near Castalia.

Bruce  married Julie Bohr 21 Sep 1991. Julie, the daughter of LeRoy and Shirley Bohr,  Bruce and Julie live and farm on the Buddenberg family farm north of Castalia. They have 2 children: Chance David  and Cassidy Ann .

Lynn married Leland V, Monroe 23 Sep 1989. They live in Ossian. Lynn is a beautician in Postville.

Madeline Buddenberg died 1 Nov 1990 at LaCrosse, Wl. She is buried in the Pleasant View Cemetery near Castalia.

Bill Buddenberg married Dianne Szabo 6 Jun 1992. Dianne, the daughter of Steve and Laura (Reisner) Szabo,  She was first married to Robert Meyer of Postville. He died in 1990. They had a daughter, Jacqueline, who married Craig Walby. Craig and Jacqueline live on the farm in Allamakee Co. where she grew up. Craig and Jacqueline have 3 children: Brandon , Jonathan  and Elizabeth . Bill and Dianne live in Castalia.

The John Buer family

John Anton Buer (b. 18 Jul 1858) was the son of Johanna Johannesdtr. and Johannes Olsen. He came to America with his parents in 1861 at the age of 3 from Toten, Norway.

Johanna (Bolson) Buer was born 1 Jun 1859, the daughter of Thorer Bolson (Baardson or Baalson) from the Tveeter farm in Raelingen, Norway and Karen Thomasen from Oslo. She was born in Glenwood Twp.,
